The art of public speaking

THE ART of PUBLIC SPEAKING

● Face an audience as frequently as you can and you will soon stop shying.

● You must learn to speak by speaking.(A doctor may prescribe but you must take the medicine)

● Don't go before an audience without blank mind have something to say. Know what you are going to talk about and how you are going to say it.

● If you believe you will fail, there is no hope for you, YOU WILLDon't go before an audience thinking you will fail, all things are good if the mind be so.

● Be courageous it lies within you to be what you will. Make yourself CALM and CONFIDENT.

● Donot hurry too begin. Hurry shows  lack of control.

● Take a deep breath, relax, and begin in a quite conversational tone as though you were speaking to one large friend.

● Don't be a monotonous speaker a monotonous speaker has only one TONE, PITCH, VOLUME, SPEED.

● The most important law of public speech is the necessity for "TRUTH",  "FORCE",  "FEELING" and "LIFE" forget all else but not this.

● Public speaking cannot be mastered by thinking or reading -- you must practice, if no one else will listen to you, listen to yourself -- you must always be your own best critic and the best severest one of all.

● The principle of emphasis is followed best, not by remembering particular rules, but by being full of a particular "FEELING". Not every word is of special importance, therefore only certain words demand emphasis.
For example,
-- Destiny is not a matter of chance it's a matter of choice.
by emphasising we can say this like
DESTINY is NOT a matter of CHANCE it's a matter of CHOICE.
In almost every sentence there are few "mountain peak words" that represent big, important ideas.

--- If you have been talking loudly, utter the emphatic word in a concentrated whisper.
--- If you have been going fast, go slow on emphatic word.
--- If you have been talking on a low pitch, take a high pitch on emphatic word and vice versa.
-

---By pitch we mean the relative position of a vocal tone as high, medium and low.

---Change of pitch produce emphasis.

---Low, soft, gentle voice was an excellent thing.

● Remember that two sentences, or two parts of same sentence, which contain changes of thought, cannot possibly be given effectively in the same key. Every big change of thought requires a big change of pitch.

● Changing of tempo is as important as emphasis, occurs in the same sentence and prevents monotony.

● One of the most important means of developing power in public speaking is to PAUSE either before or after or both, of an important word or phrase.

● If you want to make a thought particularly effective, pause just before its utterance. Silence has been called the father of the speech.

● What you say after a silence will have a more effect.

● Speech is silvern, silence is golden ; speech is human, silence is divine. Master silence and use it through pauses.

● It is not so much WHAT you say, as HOW you say it.

● Only real way to master inflection is to OBSERVE, EXPERIMENT, and PRACTICE.

● Empathic word usually comes at the end of the sentence but empathic word needs empathic expression.

● Remember that the mind of your audience follows you very closely and if you withdraw your attention from what you are saying to what you are going to say, your audience will also withdraw theirs.

● While speaking one sentence do not think of the sentence to follow.

● The man who cannot concentrate is either weak of will, a nervous wreck, or has never learned what will-power is good for.

● Loudness is not force yet there are moments, moments not minutes when big voice power may be used with tremendous effect.

● Begin with words that demand attentionEnd with words that deserve distinction.

● Four factors of force are measurable within your control, and in that far may be acquired.

(i)ideas
(ii) feeling about the subject
(iii) wording
(iv) delivery.

● It matters little how well you have mastered poise, pause, modulation and tempo, if your speech lacks fire it is dead.

● "It seems to me that the house is on fire", and your announcement may be greeted with a laugh. If you flashed out the word "THE HOUSE ON FIRE" they will crush one another in getting to the exits.

● IF YOU CANNOT SPEAK WITH CONVICTION BE SILENT.

● Men is a feeling animal, hence the public speaker's ability to arouse men to action depends almost wholly on his ability to touch their emotions.

● Mother did not have any knowledge of technique of speaking, but she has something greater: FEELINGS. THE SPEECHES THAT WILL LIVE HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH EMOTIONAL FORCE.

● You must actually enter into the character you impersonate.

● Learn something from everyone you meet.

● Do not let your words say one thing and your voice and attitude another.

● Ready in mind and resources.

● Speaking fluency is almost entirely a matter of preparation.

● Knowledge helps to get fluency.

● A single conversation across the table with a wise man is better than ten years study of books.

● A rich correct used voice is the greatest physical factor of power.

◆ TWO FUNDAMENTALS REQUISITES ◆
(i) EASE
The voice is a delicate instrument, and you must not handle it with hammer and tongs.
Nervousness and mental strain are common sources of mouth and throat constriction, so make the battle for self confident.

(ii) OPENNESS
The noise is an important tone passage and should be kept open and free for perfect tones.

● Do not gaze at the ground/floor as you talk, the voice will be directed towards the ground instead of floating out over the audience.

● When you made really good gestures in a good speech your hearers will not go away saying "what a beautiful guesture he made" but they will say "he is right, I believe in that"

● Facial expression is more important than hand expression.

● "THOUGHTS" and "FEELINGS" are the big things in speaking not the position of foot and hand.

● There are four fundamental methods of Delivering an address

(i) Reading from manuscript.
(ii) Committing the written speech and speaking from memory.
(iii) Speaking from notes.
(iv) Extemporaneous speech.

● Some sage has said: "for a thousand man who can speak, there is only one who can think; for a thousand man who can think, there is only one who can see"

● Next time you are with someone, look and see what you can discover of their habits, occupation, ideas, environment, education and so on.

● Transmute every incident of your day into a subject for an speech.

● "Don't give me the man who thinks he thinks, don't give me the man who thinks he knows, but give me the man who knows he thinks, and I have the man who knows he knows!"

● Knowing more about it than the other man will be your only hope for making the other man listen to you.

● Emerson says: "Tomorrow will be like today, life wastes itself whilst we are preparing to live."

● Do not waste your time in ways that profit you nothing.

● Environment has a strong influence upon concentration, until you have learnt to be alone in a crowd and undisturbed by clamor
